Requirements

Family Advocacy and Empowerment:

  • Advocate for the rights and needs of exceptional children and their families within the school system and community.

  • Empower families by providing information, resources, and guidance on special education laws, policies, and procedures.

  • Assist families in understanding their child’s Individualized Education Plan (IEP) and 504 Plan, including their rights and responsibilities.

  1. Individualized Support and Guidance:

    • Conduct intake assessments to understand the unique needs and challenges faced by each family and child.

    • Develop individualized support plans in collaboration with families, identifying goals, resources, and strategies to address their specific concerns and priorities.

  2. Education and Training:

    • Offer workshops, training sessions, and informational sessions for families on topics related to special education, disability rights, advocacy skills, and available support services.

    • Provide ongoing education and guidance to families on best practices for supporting their child's academic, social, and emotional development.

  3. Collaboration and Coordination:

    • Collaborate with school personnel, including teachers, counselors, and administrators, to ensure effective communication and coordination of services for exceptional children.

    • Facilitate communication between families and school staff, advocating for the implementation of appropriate accommodations and modifications to support student success.

  4. Community Engagement:

    • Establish partnerships with community organizations, advocacy groups, and service providers to expand the network of support available to families of exceptional children.

    • Connect families with community resources such as counseling services, support groups, respite care, and recreational programs.

  5. Crisis Intervention and Emotional Support:

    • Provide emotional support and crisis intervention to families during challenging times, such as transitions between school levels, conflicts with school personnel, or changes in services.

    • Offer guidance and referrals to mental health professionals or support groups as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Special Education, Social Work, Psychology, Counseling, or a related field; Master’s degree preferred.

  • Experience working with families and children with disabilities, preferably in an educational or community setting.

  • Knowledge of special education laws, regulations, and best practices.

  • Strong communication, advocacy, and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to build rapport with diverse families and establish trusting relationships.

  • Compassion, empathy, and a commitment to promoting the well-being of exceptional children and their families.

Your dedication and advocacy will empower families to become effective partners in their child's education and promote positive outcomes for exceptional children K-12.
