Job Description: American Sign Language (ASL) Teacher - Virtual
Position Overview: As an American Sign Language (ASL) Teacher in a virtual setting, you will play a crucial role in providing high-quality instruction and support to students learning ASL remotely. Your responsibilities will include designing engaging and interactive lessons, facilitating live virtual classes, providing individualized feedback, and fostering a supportive online learning community. By leveraging technology and innovative teaching methods, you will create an immersive and effective learning experience that enables students to develop proficiency in ASL and gain a deeper understanding of Deaf culture.
Key Responsibilities:
Curriculum Development:
Develop and adapt ASL curriculum and instructional materials for online delivery, ensuring alignment with proficiency standards and learning objectives.
Design engaging and interactive lessons that incorporate a variety of multimedia resources, visual aids, and authentic learning experiences.
Live Virtual Instruction:
Facilitate live virtual classes using video conferencing platforms, delivering dynamic and interactive ASL instruction to students of varying proficiency levels.
Utilize features such as screen sharing, whiteboards, and breakout rooms to enhance engagement and collaboration during virtual sessions.
Individualized Feedback and Support:
Provide personalized feedback and support to students through virtual office hours, asynchronous communication channels, and interactive assignments.
Offer guidance on ASL grammar, vocabulary, fingerspelling, and expressive and receptive skills development to help students improve their proficiency.
Assessment and Progress Monitoring:
Develop and administer formative and summative assessments to evaluate student progress and proficiency in ASL.
Use assessment data to track student growth, identify areas for improvement, and adjust instruction to meet individual learning needs.
Technology Integration:
Leverage educational technology tools and platforms to enhance ASL instruction, facilitate interactive learning experiences, and promote accessibility for all students.
Provide technical support to students as needed to ensure smooth participation in virtual classes and activities.
Community Building and Cultural Competence:
Foster a supportive and inclusive online learning community that respects and celebrates Deaf culture, diversity, and linguistic diversity.
Promote cultural competence and sensitivity among students, encouraging exploration and appreciation of diverse perspectives and experiences.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Deaf Studies, ASL Education, Education, or a related field; Master’s degree preferred.
Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) at an advanced level, with native or near-native fluency preferred.
Experience teaching ASL to students of varying ages and proficiency levels, preferably in a virtual or online setting.
Familiarity with online learning platforms, video conferencing tools, and educational technology resources for virtual instruction.
Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
Commitment to equity, inclusion, and accessibility in education.
Position Type:Â Part-time or Full-time, depending on student enrollment and program needs.
