Job Description: Exceptional Children (EC) Teacher (Grades 9-12)

Position Overview: As an Exceptional Children (EC) Teacher for grades 9-12, you will specialize in providing comprehensive support and instruction to students with diverse learning needs in a high school setting. Your role is critical in ensuring that students with disabilities have access to a meaningful and inclusive education that prepares them for post-secondary success. By delivering tailored instruction, collaborating with colleagues, and advocating for student needs, you will empower students to achieve academic, social, and personal growth.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Individualized Education Plan (IEP) Development and Implementation:

    • Lead the development, implementation, and annual review of IEPs for students with disabilities, in collaboration with the IEP team and families.

    • Modify curriculum, assessments, and instructional strategies to accommodate students' individual learning needs and promote access to the general education curriculum.

  2. Specialized Instruction and Support:

    • Provide direct instruction to students with disabilities in both small group and individual settings, focusing on academic skill development, executive functioning, and self-advocacy.

    • Use evidence-based instructional practices and assistive technologies to facilitate student learning and engagement across content areas.

  3. Co-Teaching and Collaboration:

    • Collaborate with general education teachers to co-plan, co-teach, and co-assess inclusive lessons that address the diverse needs of all learners in the classroom.

    • Serve as a resource and consultant to general education teachers, providing guidance on differentiation, accommodations, and behavior management strategies.

  4. Transition Planning and Post-Secondary Preparation:

    • Support students with disabilities in developing transition plans that outline goals, services, and supports for post-secondary education, employment, and independent living.

    • Facilitate career exploration, job readiness training, and community-based learning experiences to prepare students for life after high school.

  5. Progress Monitoring and Data Analysis:

    • Conduct ongoing assessments to monitor student progress towards IEP goals and objectives, using data to inform instructional decisions and modify interventions as needed.

    • Collaborate with the IEP team to analyze assessment data, evaluate student outcomes, and make data-driven recommendations for program improvement.

  6. Family and Community Engagement:

    • Maintain open and ongoing communication with families, providing regular updates on student progress, discussing strategies for support at home, and soliciting input on educational goals.

    • Collaborate with community agencies, service providers, and post-secondary institutions to connect students and families with resources and opportunities for continued support.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Special Education, Education, or a related field; Master’s degree preferred.

  • Valid teaching certification/license in Special Education.

  • Experience working with high school students with disabilities, including knowledge of high school curriculum and graduation requirements.

  • Strong understanding of special education laws, regulations, and best practices.

  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.

  • Commitment to fostering a culture of inclusion, equity, and belonging for all students.
